AMBS 60th Anniversary Celebration Campaign - "The Power of Legacy: Unleashing Deserved Success"

This campaign aims to empower our alumni and current students to positively influence those around them. By leveraging their postgraduate experiences at UoM, they can uplift colleagues, subordinates, and family members, encouraging them to pursue postgraduate programs at the East Asia Centre.

It is with great pleasure that we introduce our very first features students, Daniel Mijic, a distinguished graduate of the Manchester Global MBA Class of 2018 and Luisa Oehri, from the July 2024 cohort. Luisa is one of Daniel’s best friends. Both originally from Liechtenstein, they have built successful careers in Hong Kong. Let's listen to their stories!

 1.           What does the concept of 'legacy' mean to you personally?

To me, the concept of 'legacy' represents the lasting impact we leave behind through our actions, values, and contributions. It's about creating something meaningful that endures beyond our lifetime, positively influencing others and the world around us. Whether it's through personal relationships, professional achievements, or community involvement, a legacy is the footprint we leave on the path of life.

2.           What aspects of the "Power of Legacy" campaign resonate most with you?

The "Power of Legacy" campaign resonates with me through its inspiring stories of resilience and creativity from individuals in various fields. It highlights the transformative impact of legacy gifts on education, business, and personal development, showcasing how these contributions can lead to significant advancements and positive changes. The personal connections and heartfelt stories add a relatable element, while the creative expressions of individuals who channel their experiences into their work inspire and uplift others. Together, these aspects underscore the enduring power of legacy and the meaningful change it can bring in education, business, and personal life.

3.           What motivated you to refer someone to the postgraduate programmes at the University of Manchester? Was it the qualification or perspective gain, or the opportunity to experience the joy of continuous learning?

I was motivated to refer someone to the postgraduate programmes at the University of Manchester because it was the whole mix of the program's comprehensive offerings and the university's stellar reputation that convinced me. The combination of gaining valuable qualifications, broadening perspectives, and experiencing the joy of continuous learning made it an easy recommendation.

4.           What qualities or skills do you see in the referee that make them a strong contributor to the UoM or AMBS community?

I have known the referee for a few years and have witnessed her ambition to grow both personally and professionally. She is eager to learn, consistently seeking opportunities to expand her knowledge and skills. Additionally, she is a very caring person, always taking care of the wellbeing of those around her. Her dedication, drive, and compassion make her a strong contributor to the University of Manchester or AMBS community.

5.           Can you share why you believe the Manchester Method – that focuses on applying theory, through group work, projects and practice-based learning can benefit the referee for their future development professionally.

The Manchester Method is incredibly beneficial for professional development because it immerses students in real-world scenarios through group work, projects, and practice-based learning. In group work, you face the realities of time and task management, and conflicts may arise that need to be resolved and negotiated as a team. This hands-on approach allows you to implement all the theories you learn along the way, making the learning experience tremendously impactful. It equips students with practical skills and experiences that are directly applicable to their future careers, fostering both personal and professional growth.

6.           Anything you would like to share with us?

The Global MBA program at the University of Manchester has been instrumental in my journey, opening the path to the entrepreneurial world. For the past few years, I have been running my company, Blue Concept Asia Limited, in Hong Kong, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this April 2025. My education at the University of Manchester played a pivotal role in my success as an entrepreneur, providing me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to thrive in the business world. I can only encourage everyone to pursue an educational path and highly recommend the University of Manchester for its exceptional programs and supportive community.

1.             What does the concept of 'legacy' mean to you personally?

To me, legacy starts with family. It’s about the values, knowledge, and example I set, especially for my children. Pursuing further education — like the Manchester Global MBA — is not just a personal achievement, but a statement to my kids that learning never stops, and growth is always possible.

I want them to see that hard work, perseverance, and investing in yourself can open doors and create lasting impact. My hope is that through my journey, they are inspired to dream bigger and believe in their own potential. Legacy, for me, is about passing down more than just words — it’s about living the example I want them to follow.

2.             What aspects of the "Power of Legacy" campaign resonate most with you?

What resonates with me the most is the idea that our efforts today can become a gift for the future — even if the people we care about don’t fully see it yet. As a parent of young children, I know they’re too small to understand why I’m studying or what this programme really means. But that’s okay — because I’m not just doing this for myself. I’m doing it for them too.

This campaign reminds me that legacy is about planting seeds now, so that one day, they’ll grow into something meaningful. I want my children to grow up knowing that their parent worked hard to build a better life and set a strong foundation for them. Even if they don’t understand it today, I hope one day they’ll look back and feel proud — and maybe even inspired to chase their own dreams.

3.             What qualities do you see in the referrer, as a Manchester Global MBA graduate, when you were introduced the Manchester Postgraduate Programmes and how impactful do you see that was in your decision to signing up?

What stood out to me about Daniel — beyond his professionalism and confidence as a Manchester Global MBA graduate — was his authenticity, warmth, and the way he carried his experiences with humility. Coming from the same small country and both settling in Hong Kong, we naturally bonded, and over time, he became great friends.

Through our friendship, I saw firsthand how his experience with the Manchester MBA had shaped his perspective, deepened his confidence, and given him a truly global mindset. He never pressured me to join the programme, but the way he spoke about it — with honesty, passion, and gratitude — stayed with me. His journey made the decision feel less intimidating, and more like something I could grow into, too.

Now, being a part of the University of Manchester community, I understand what he meant. My fellow students, the professors, and the support around me have become something that feels like home. It's not just about academic growth — it’s about connection, shared ambition, and mutual support. I’m grateful to Daniel for opening that door for me, and for helping me take the first step toward something that has already changed my life.

4.             How important do you think a strong student and alumni community is for your future development as a graduate from this programme?

A strong student and alumni community is essential for my future development — both professionally and personally. One of the most inspiring aspects of the Manchester Global MBA is the incredible diversity within the student body. My peers come from a wide range of industries, cultures, and professional backgrounds — from finance and healthcare to engineering, entrepreneurship, and the nonprofit sector.

Learning alongside people with such varied experiences has challenged me to think in new ways and to broaden my understanding of global business. Every discussion brings fresh insights, and I’ve realized how much we can learn from each other, beyond the formal curriculum. It’s not just about networking — it’s about growing together, exchanging ideas, and building meaningful connections that can last a lifetime.

I also see the alumni network as a powerful extension of this community. Knowing that there is a global group of professionals who have walked this same path gives me confidence that I’ll continue to grow even after graduation. Whether it’s for mentorship, collaboration, or simply shared understanding, I believe this community will be a continuous source of support and opportunity throughout my journey.

For me, being part of this diverse, dynamic network is one of the most valuable parts of the programme — and something I’ll carry with me long after the MBA is complete.

5.             What are your aspirations for mentoring or uplifting others in your community once you complete your studies at UoM? Would you consider referring another new friends or colleague for the programme like a pass it on?

Absolutely. One of the most meaningful parts of my journey so far has been the guidance and encouragement I received from Daniel, a fellow Manchester Global MBA graduate. He didn’t just tell me about the programme — he helped me feel like I belonged, even before I enrolled. That kind of support made a lasting impact on me, and I would love to pass that on.

Once I complete my studies, I hope to be a mentor to others in my community — especially those who, like me, may be navigating life in a new country, or wondering if a global MBA is within their reach. I want to help others see what’s possible, to share my experience honestly, and to be the kind of supportive voice that Daniel was for me.

The Manchester MBA is more than just a degree — it’s a transformative experience that helps people grow in confidence, perspective, and purpose. I would absolutely consider referring friends, colleagues, or even new acquaintances who are looking for that next step and might benefit from what this programme offers.

For me, it's not just about "passing it on" — it's about building a chain of support, inspiration, and shared success that stretches across countries, industries, and lives. That’s the kind of community I want to be part of — and contribute to.

6.             Any other special feedback you would like to share with us?

I just want to express my sincere gratitude for being part of this journey. From the very beginning, I’ve felt welcomed, supported, and inspired — not only by the faculty and staff, but especially by the students and alumni who make up this incredible community. It’s rare to find a programme that balances academic excellence with such a strong human connection.

The Manchester Global MBA has already had a deep impact on how I see myself — not just as a professional, but as a leader, a learner, and someone who belongs to a global network of people striving to make a difference.

I also want to acknowledge how meaningful it is to feel seen and supported as an international student here in Hong Kong. Thanks to the connections I’ve made, I’ve found a kind of home away from home — and that’s something I’ll carry with me always.

Thank you for creating a space where people from all walks of life can come together, grow, and uplift each other. I’m proud to be part of the Manchester family.
